If I choose to use my real name and it is a common one, how does that hurt me? It can. If you let other details about yourself slip online, then a Google search using those details plus your name may be sufficient to identify you. To be clear. Internet stalking is rare. Most experiences you will have within this forum will not be any more negative than you might have chatting over coffee at Starbucks, but unpleasant occurrences are always possible, as are seriously bad occurrences. A very recent unpleasant occurrence in another discussion forum comes to mind. It is little different really from chatting with your hairdresser; for all you know, she is sharing what you tell her with your husband's mistress. Or she may become violently aggressive, and set out to seduce your spouse, kill you, and take over your life. Rare, but it happens. The difference is that what you say online can be seen by anyone, not only the person you were talking to, and that increases the odds for harm to occur. Therefore, use discretion, and reveal nothing about yourself that could be used to identify you. You never know who or what is out there in the aethernet.
